Paragliding in Kas, Turkey

Kas is a truly idyllic place to paraglide. The picturesque mountains, beautifully blue water, and clear skies were the perfect location.

Paragliding in Kas: Panorama of a Turkish Paradise

The main things on my Turkey to-do-list were diving, and, of course, hot air ballooning over the magical landscape of Cappadocia. Funnily enough, paragliding wasn’t really on my radar, but after a week of diving in the lovely South Western Turkish town of Kas, watching endless paragliders land by the harbour, I couldn’t bare to watch anymore.

A short 10 minute (albeit deadly, and arguably much scarier than the paragliding itself) drive up the mountain and we were 3,300 feet high, at the paragliding take-off point and getting geared up with various harnesses and pads.

Looking uncool beats being battered, hey?

3…2…1… Run!
I was harnessed up before I really knew what was going on, and before I even had time to stop and think. The only instruction I was given by the instructors was to run on command. It all happened really fast.

“3…2…1…”

“Run!”

I try to run but it’s more of an awkward waddle.

Running is much easier said than done when you have kilos of gear strapped to your back. Either way, it got us in the air! The transition from land to air was terrifically and unexpectedly smooth, and seconds later we were soaring in the wind!

Woo hoo!

Picture Perfect Panorama
The winds were great and for over half an hour we floated over a kilometre up in the air, not actually going any lower. We actually went higher!

I put my arms out and soared like a bird.

Flying felt much like you’d imagine. It is euphoric, peaceful. It is freedom.

I could have stayed up there all day.

I got talking to the instructor, telling him how great a job this is to have.

“It’s alright”, he says. “Tandem flying is a little boring. My real passion is acrobatics – stunt flying”.

My ears pricked up.

“Oh really? So er… what can we do with this thing?” I couldn’t help myself.

“Are you sure you can handle it?” he smirked.

Damn right I was sure! I’m a serious adrenaline junkie and wanted to get all up in that g-force!

We started spinning and the g-force was insane! That’s more like it!

And then in one split second, the canopy started to buckle.

I watched his expert hands correct the ropes so fast, I barely even had time to sh*t myself.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“I’m fine! I live for this stuff!”

My heart was beating like a drum. I was impressed – I think I might have initially mistook paragliding as an easy sport, but it actually requires a lot of skill.

I took in the last of the view before we made our way slowly down to the harbour for landing.

Easy like a Sunday morning.

The best thing about the landing place by the harbour is that you are again right in the centre of town, ready to enjoy the rest of what Kas has to offer. It also means that if paragliding ain’t your thing, you can still enjoy a stroll by the water and watch all the other crazy fools coming in to land.

Paragliding in Kas – Practical Advice
Bring a strap if you want to take your camera: A camera dropped from such a height can be a lethal weapon.
Wear decent shoes! You want to make sure they won’t fall off, and that you have sturdy shoes so you don’t hurt your feet when landing.
Booking: I actually booked through a friend who knew the paragliding guys. It’s really easy to book at any of the agencies in town.
Barter: I paid 170TRY – my local friend said this is what the locals pay. I took his word for it. Be sure to barter for the price and any videos you might want to purchase afterwards.
Beware: If you get nauseous on rides, maybe skip the g-force spin. It’s pretty intense!

Wow, that looks awesome! I’ve always wanted to try paragliding but somehow never quite got round to it. Shame about the camera, but the pics they took are stunning, and maybe sometimes its good to just sit back and enjoy the ride rather than having to make sure you take lots of photos (I really should take my own advice sometimes about not experiencing things through my the lens all the time!).

Ha. I never wanted to try paragliding until I spent a few weeks in Queenstown watching the paragliders come down. It looks so peaceful and beautiful. The freefall herky-jerky part of skydiving or bungee jumping reaaaaally doesn’t appeal to me, but I think I could get into paragliding.

That looks awesome!! I’ve always wanted to try this, there is one area in Costa Rica that you see paragliders all day long and is a very famous spot but I just haven’t gotten around to do it. What a view!
